🌎 South America Budget
Argentina, Paraguay, Peru… Real monthly expenses, item by item.
This is our current playground (2025-2026). South America is generally pricier than Southeast Asia, but stays very accessible compared to Western Europe or Australia.
💰 Overall range
€1200-2000/month for 2 people, all-in.
📊 Indicative breakdown (2 people)
| Item | Monthly range |
|---|---|
| Accommodation (studio/apartment) | €400-700 |
| Food (mix market/restaurant) | €350-550 |
| Local transport | €80-150 |
| Activities & sightseeing | €150-300 |
| Health insurance | €90 (~$45/person) |
📍 What makes the budget vary
- Argentina: local inflation makes prices very volatile - the budget in euros/dollars can swing a lot month to month depending on the exchange rate
- Paraguay (Asunción): one of the cheapest countries in the region, particularly low accommodation costs
- Peru (Lima, Arequipa): average cost of living, but excellent, affordable food scene (ceviche, local markets)
💡 How to cut your budget
- In Argentina, check the most favorable exchange options at the time of your stay (the situation shifts fast)
- Eat at local markets rather than touristy downtown restaurants
- Prefer long-distance buses (often comfortable and affordable) over flights for internal trips
